What does “undress AI” mean?

The definition, the three-step pipeline behind every undress app, the difference from deepfakes, and the US rules that apply in 2026.

Definition

What is undress AI in one paragraph?

Undress AI is an umbrella term for software that takes a photo of a clothed person and generates a synthetic nude version of it. Since 2019 the technique has moved from GAN-based programs to diffusion inpainting; the output is a statistical guess by the model, not a revealed body. In 2026 the term covers web services, apps and messenger bots.

How does undress AI work technically?

Every service we tested follows three steps. A segmentation model locates the clothing and produces a mask. A diffusion model runs inpainting: it treats the masked area as unknown, adds noise and denoises it under an internal prompt so the fill matches pose, skin tone and lighting.

A final pass blends edges. The tool does not see through fabric; it replaces fabric with an invention drawn from training data, which is why one photo yields different bodies on different services. Our how undress apps work article illustrates each step.

How is undress AI different from a deepfake?

A deepfake usually replaces or animates a face; undress AI keeps the face and replaces the body region.

Both create what the TAKE IT DOWN Act calls a “digital forgery” when the subject is an identifiable real person, so the legal outcome is the same although the pipelines differ. Marketing labels such as “clothes remover” and the 2019 program name “DeepNude” describe the same inpainting category.

Is undress AI legal in the United States in 2026?

On your own photo or a consenting adult it is lawful.

On an identifiable person without consent it is not: Public Law 119-12, the TAKE IT DOWN Act signed May 19, 2025, makes knowing publication of a non-consensual intimate digital forgery a federal offense with up to 2 years in prison (3 years for a minor), and since May 19, 2026 covered platforms must remove reported images within 48 hours.

Victims also hold a civil claim under 15 U.S.C. §6851 with $150,000 in liquidated damages. Our rankings list only tools that require consent confirmation and block minors.

A ‘digital forgery’ under the TAKE IT DOWN Act is an intimate visual depiction of an identifiable individual created or altered using AI or other technological means.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Does undress AI show the real body under clothes?

No. The clothing region is masked and refilled by a diffusion model that invents skin and anatomy from training data. Nothing is recovered from the original photo, which is why two services give two different results. Claims of “seeing through” fabric are marketing, not method.

Is it legal to use undress AI on my own photo?

Yes. A photo of yourself, or of an adult who has given explicit consent, is lawful input in the United States. The TAKE IT DOWN Act and 15 U.S.C. §6851 target non-consensual depictions of identifiable people. Minnesota restricts the services themselves from August 1, 2026.

What is the penalty for a non-consensual undress image?

Under Public Law 119-12, knowing publication of a non-consensual intimate digital forgery carries up to 2 years in federal prison, or 3 years when the subject is a minor, plus fines and restitution. Civil liability under 15 U.S.C. §6851 adds $150,000 in liquidated damages.

How is undress AI different from face swap?

Face swap moves one person’s face onto another body or video while the body stays as filmed. Undress AI keeps the face and replaces the clothed body region through inpainting. Both are digital forgeries when the subject is identifiable and non-consenting; the technical tells differ.

Which model do undress apps use?

Most services do not disclose their base model. Behavior in our tests, such as 512 px native output and typical seam artifacts, matches Stable Diffusion-derived inpainting checkpoints, often with fine-tuned weights or LoRA adapters. A few services route requests to hosted model catalogs.

Where can I report an undress image of me?

Use the platform’s TAKE IT DOWN request route, which must remove the image within 48 hours, and the hash-based tools StopNCII.org for adults or NCMEC’s Take It Down for anyone under 18. For anything on this site, use Report NCII.
