SafeSearch is the explicit-content filter in Google Search and Bing that hides or blurs adult results. Google offers 3 modes: Filter, Blur and Off, with Filter applied by default when its systems indicate a user is under 18. Bing offers Strict, Moderate and Off, with Moderate as the default. Administrators can lock the filter for whole networks. Both engines expose three levels, but the defaults and the lock mechanisms differ. The table lists them side by side. ## How does Google decide what is explicit? Google classifies pages and images with automated systems that read text, images and site-level signals. A page on a site that mostly hosts adult content is filtered even if the specific page is neutral, and Google recommends that adult sites group such content under a separate host or directory. Explicit here means sexual content, nudity, gore and violence. Filter removes those results; Blur hides explicit images behind a blur while keeping the text link. Off shows everything the query matches. A signed-in adult can change the setting unless an administrator has locked it. ## How does Bing handle it? Bing’s Moderate setting, the default, filters adult images and video but not text. Strict filters all three, and Microsoft may set Strict automatically for users under 18 to comply with local law. Schools and companies force Strict by pointing www.bing.com at strict.bing.com in DNS. The mechanisms matter for adult review sites because a large share of searches is made from networks or accounts where the filter is locked.
