AI Girlfriend Apps With a Free Tier
Message caps, picture allowances, model quality and upgrade prices for five companion apps with a no-cost tier, from official help pages and listings checked on September 3, 2026.
An AI girlfriend app with a free tier is a companion chat service that lets you talk without paying, then charges for memory, voice, pictures or relationship modes. We checked five such apps on September 3, 2026; paid entry ranges from $9.99 to $19.99 per month. All are SFW here; see our Responsible AI policy.
What does each no-cost tier include?
The five apps take different approaches to the same funnel: unlimited text on a weaker model, or capped text on the full model. Facts come from official help pages and plan pages where they loaded, and from app-store listings dated August 2026 otherwise; the companion apps hub carries dated reviews as they publish.
| App | No-cost tier | Main cap | Paid entry | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Replika | Basic chat as a “friend” | Romantic status, voice and unblurred selfies locked | Pro $19.99 per month or $69.99 per year | Ultra tier listed at $29.99 per month by trackers |
| Nomi | Chat with limited daily messages | 400-character messages; 2 selfies and 2 art requests per day | $15.99 per month, $39.99 per quarter, $99.99 per year | Paid tier: 40 image requests per day, up to 10 companions |
| Kindroid | Unlimited text on the Lite model, 2 companion slots | Full model, voice and video calls locked | Standard $13.99 per month on web, $15.99 in app stores | Ultra and MAX are monthly add-ons at $24.99 and $59.99 |
| Character.AI | Chat with ads and slow mode | Latest models and memory locked | c.ai+ $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year | Annual plan auto-renews; no refunds on web purchases |
| Joyfun AI | Browser chat, no account; covered all 5 test runs without a watermark | No published cap; marketed as unlimited | Credit packs exist, but prices did not render at our check | No identified operating company at our August 22, 2026 test; editor score 6.7 / 10 in the Joyfun AI review |
Two patterns stand out. Kindroid is the only app whose unpaid plan has no message meter; Nomi is the only one that gives unpaid users a small picture allowance on the same model paid users get.
Which limits matter most in daily use?
Message caps are the first wall. Nomi’s 400-character limit on unpaid accounts, against 800 with a subscription, changes how conversations feel more than a daily count does. Model tiering is the second: Kindroid’s Lite model and Character.AI’s older models are noticeably weaker, so the unpaid experience under-represents the paid product. Pictures are the third, and the most expensive to provide: Replika blurs romantic selfies until Pro, Nomi allows two per day, and Character.AI does not document pictures on its plans page. The companion apps that send pictures article covers that layer in detail.
How do the paid prices compare?
Annual plans are consistently 40 to 60 percent cheaper than monthly ones, and app-store prices run higher than web prices.
| App | Monthly | Annual | Effective monthly on annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI c.ai+ | $9.99 | $94.99 | About $7.92 |
| Kindroid Standard (web) | $13.99 | $139.99 | About $11.67 |
| Nomi | $15.99 | $99.99 | About $8.33 |
| Replika Pro | $19.99 | $69.99 | About $5.83 |
Replika’s annual plan is the cheapest full subscription in the set despite the highest monthly price, a spread of more than three times between billing options. Character.AI’s annual plan renews automatically, and trackers report that web purchases are non-refundable; set a reminder before the renewal date.

What do the terms say about age and data?
All five products are marketed to adults, and romantic modes are gated to users 18 and over, but verification methods differ and were not checked here. Companion apps store conversation history by design, since memory is the product, so the retention question is whether you can delete it; we did not test deletion paths in this check, so read each app’s help documentation before sharing anything personal. Because chats can include intimate detail, treat the privacy policy as you would for a health app; our digital consent entry and GDPR entry list the questions to ask, and the acceptable use policy explains why we exclude apps that role-play minors.
Which app should you start with?
Start with the unpaid tier that most resembles the paid product, so the trial tells you something. That is Kindroid for text, because the cap is model quality rather than volume, and Nomi for anyone who wants to see the picture feature before paying. Replika’s unpaid tier is the most restricted of the four established apps but its $69.99 annual plan is the cheapest upgrade. Character.AI suits people who want many characters rather than one companion. Joyfun AI scored 6.7 / 10 in our Joyfun AI review (tested August 22, 2026); with no identified operator and vague retention, keep personal detail out of its chats. Scores follow the protocol under How we rate.

Which AI girlfriend app has the most generous no-cost tier?
Kindroid, on volume: unlimited text on its Lite model with two companion slots and no message meter. Nomi is more generous on features, giving unpaid users two selfies and two art requests per day on the same model as paid users, but caps messages at 400 characters. Replika’s unpaid tier locks romantic modes and unblurred pictures.
How much does Replika Pro cost in 2026?
Replika Pro is listed at $19.99 per month or $69.99 per year, about $5.83 per month on the annual plan, with a lifetime option reported at $299.99 and an Ultra tier at $29.99 per month. Pro unlocks the romantic-partner status, voice calls, unblurred selfies and image features, according to Replika’s help center.
Is Character.AI free to use?
Yes. The unpaid tier includes chat with ads and slow mode on older models. c.ai+ costs $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year, roughly $7.92 per month, and adds newer models, better memory and unlimited voice calls. The annual plan auto-renews yearly and web purchases are non-refundable under the vendor’s terms.
Do free tiers send pictures?
Only Nomi documents a picture allowance for unpaid users, at two selfies and two art requests per day, rising to 40 image requests per day on paid plans. Replika blurs romantic selfies until Pro. Kindroid and Character.AI do not document picture allowances on their plan pages; Joyfun AI publishes no picture allowance, though its no-cost tier covered all five of our test runs.
Are these apps safe for personal conversations?
They store conversation history by design, so read the retention and deletion terms first and locate the deletion path in each app’s help documentation; we did not test deletion. Joyfun AI named no operating company at our August 22, 2026 test and keeps data “as long as reasonably necessary”, a reason to keep identifying detail out of its chats.
Why does an adult-AI review site cover SFW companion apps?
Because the same readers compare them, and because companion apps that sell pictures raise the same consent and retention questions we score elsewhere. Covering them under the same five criteria, privacy 30, quality 25, price 20, speed 15 and support 10, lets readers compare a companion subscription with any other AI subscription on equal terms.
